Title:             Program Manager (Chengdu) - Giant Panda Programme

Location:      Chengdu

 

Major Function:  

The position supports the Program Leader in developing integrated conservation and fundraising strategies for the giant panda programme, including annual workplans and budgets, while independently designing and implementing giant panda conservation projects in response to key conservation challenges. The role covers the full project cycle, from scientific background research, project and proposal design, and fundraising documentation to stakeholder coordination, project implementation, monitoring, and reporting.

 

Main Responsibilities:

1. Program Strategy & Planning Support

Ÿ   Support the Program Leader in developing overall conservation and fundraising strategies for the giant panda program.

Ÿ   Contribute to the preparation of annual workplans, budgets, logical frameworks, and implementation schedules in line with program objectives and donor requirements.

Ÿ   Assist in aligning conservation priorities with fundraising opportunities to ensure program sustainability and impact.

2. Project Design, Fundraising & Implementation

Ÿ   Independently design and implement giant panda conservation projects in response to current and emerging conservation challenges.

Ÿ   Lead the development of project proposals and related fundraising documents, including concept notes, technical proposals, and donor reports.

Ÿ   Conduct scientific background research and needs assessments to ensure project design is evidence-based and technically sound.

Ÿ   Coordinate and communicate effectively with government agencies, research institutions, local partners, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project approval and implementation.

Ÿ   Oversee project execution, including activity planning, monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management to ensure timely delivery of outputs and outcomes.

Ÿ   Prepare high-quality narrative and technical reports to donors and internal management.

Ÿ   Maintain close and regular coordination with internal finance and communications teams to ensure:

1)       Accurate financial planning, reporting, and burn rate management in compliance with organizational and donor requirements;

2)       Proper external communications, risk management, and compliance with relevant policies and regulations.

3. Regional Events, Communication & Education Support

Ÿ   Support the planning and implementation of major regional activities, including communication campaigns, public engagement initiatives, and environmental and nature education programs.

Ÿ   Provide technical input and conservation content for outreach materials, public education activities, and stakeholder engagement events.

 

Qualification:

1.      Education

Ÿ   Master's degree in ecology, conservation biology, conservation management, or a closely related discipline preferred.

2.      Professional Experience

Ÿ   Minimum 8 years of professional experience in conservation or environmental NGOs.

Ÿ   Strong ecological background, with giant panda research or field conservation experience strongly preferred.

Ÿ   Proven ability to independently manage conservation projects from design through implementation and reporting.

Ÿ   2-3 years of management or team leadership experience preferred.

3.      Skills & Competencies

Ÿ   Strong project management skills with a results-oriented approach.

Ÿ   Solid understanding of conservation policy, stakeholder dynamics, and NGO operations in China.

Ÿ   Excellent communication and coordination skills; able to work effectively with government, donors, partners, and internal teams.

Ÿ   Fluent in both English and Chinese (written and spoken).

Ÿ   Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving abilities and resilience in challenging field conditions.

Ÿ   Innovative mindset with a commitment to continuous professional learning.

Ÿ   Strong team player, able to work respectfully across cultures and disciplines.

4.      Additional Requirements

Willingness and ability to travel frequently to mountainous and remote areas in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces.
